Prices/Ordering Pieces
I have been asked why the pieces on my website don't have prices listed. The main reason is that most of the items have already been sold - or claimed by my wife! Also, all of the pieces done for the Huntsville Botanical Garden from their "signature" Dogwood Tree that died were wholesale (with a discount), so the prices have no relationship to a retail sale. Also, the prices they received may have had more to do with the wood being from the 120 year-old tree than from my efforts.
That said, my in-house "Business Manager" has suggested I provide some guidance to potential customers, so this page is dedicated to laying out approximate costs for various types of bowls, vases and other vessels. Note that I have mainly Cherry and Black Walnut from the local area (Alabama), but occasionally get Bradford Pear and Norfolk Island Pine. If I had to buy a specific type of wood, the price would be added to my fee. This site is not set up to do direct sales, so you will have to contact me if you want to discuss a particular type of work and it's price. My contact information is: Bob Hovde, 206 Walker Avenue, Huntsville AL 35801. Phone: 256-532-3923. Email: bob@hovde.us |
Large Bowls: Up to 12 inches in diameter, vary. At the small end they would be $30-40, but could be as much as $75 if they are wider and deeper (E.G., a salad bowl size).
Very Large Bowls: Bowls over 12 inches in diameter depend on finding a suitable piece of wood. I have made bowls up to 22 inches in diameter and would price the largest at approximately $200. |
Carved Bowls: The design element affects the cost as much as the size of the basic bowl. Simple carving doesn't add much, but major work could double the price. A simple 8 inch bowl with carving like the butterfly bowl shown would be $75, while the bowl carved to look like a basket (about the same size) would be $250.

Vases: Vases and "hollow form" vessels (those with a narrow opening at the top) follow the same pattern as bowls. Plain vessels depend on size and shape. A vase, like the walnut vase shown, would be $30-40 depending on size.
A more intricate closed-form vase with considerable carving, like the "Sagging Leaf" vase shown would be more like $120.
A larger, more intricate vessel, like the 7x13 inch carved form shown would be in the $350 class.
